Trouble enters the palace as the Jiajing Emperor of the Ming Dynasty's reign draws to a close. There are no longer any of the funds that were put aside for Yangzhou's river to be repaired. The Jing Yi Wei's Lu Yi (Allen Ren), who has been assigned by the emperor to look into the incident, is committed to identifying the perpetrators and holding them accountable. He is not, however, handling this case alone.
Yuan Jin Xia (Tan Song Yun), a skilled constable in the secret police, is an obvious option to help Lu Yi with the case. There's just one catch: the hot-tempered constable has run across Lu Yi before, and neither of them has forgotten the argument that ensued. The two must cooperate despite their unpleasant past in order to identify individuals responsible for the missing government funds.
By putting their disagreements aside, Lu Yi and Jin Xia develop a strong working relationship. As they investigate the issue further, their feelings for one another start to grow and eventually develop into a lovely romance. But when Jin Xia discovers a sinister and horrifying truth about her background, everything comes tumbling down.
